Servicing a Laptop
1. Identify the Problem: The laptop is slow to open programs and files. Startup time is high. Random crashes and programs crashing. The Hard drive is 95% full
2. Establish a Theory of Probable Cause: As the hard drive is 95% full this leaves little room for the system to run smoothly which increases the amount of resources the laptop needs to run normally.
3. Test the Theory to Determine the Cause: Based on task manager I can see the hard drive is working hard as well as the cpu and ram. This is with no programs running other than the necessary programs for the OS
4. Establish a Plan of Action and Implement the Solution: My plan was to remove all unrequired files and programs. Perform a hard drive optimisation or degragmentation to ensure the hard drive can use the new availble storage more efficiently.
5. Verify Full System Functionality and Implement Preventive Measures: The system now functioned quicker and did not experience crashes. I informed the operator that keeping the storage below %%% utilisation will ensure the laptop runs smoothly. I also had hard drive optimisation run once a month.
6. Document Findings. I documented so that the operator can refer to it in future if the problem arises again. 1. Remove all unnessary files 2. uninstall unrequired programs. 3. Check startup list in task manager and turn off any un-needed applications. 4. Remove temp files. 5. Remove old windows updates. 6. Run Hard drive optimsation process. 7. Restart computer.
